Chapter Nine

I t was taking her a long time to come to the door. He considered that she might not be able to hear him over the rain, or that she might be busy with the baby, or that she might not be home, even if her car was in the driveway.

He was just about to give up when the door abruptly opened. She was surprised to see him, he could tell that much. And if he read her right, she was at least a little bit glad.

“You’re back,” she said, opening the screen door.

“Not much to it,” he said, stepping out of the rain and into the warmth of her smile. “Never got beyond the saber rattling.”

There was no doubt that he was glad to see her. He tried not to stare at her, though staring was safer, he supposed, than doing what he actually wanted to do.

I am in deep trouble here , he thought. He had suspected as much the whole time he was gone. Now he was absolutely certain, and he had no idea what to do about it.

“How’s Shorty?” he asked, trying to keep his eyes on her face and not on her breasts. She was wearing jeans and a little V-neck T-shirt. Some kind of soft...baby blue thing with a ribbon bow pretty much where he—

Don’t look, damn it!

“She’s had a virus—some fever and an upset stomach. She’s better, though. She’s napping. When did you get back?” She led the way into the kitchen, and he was only too happy to follow. Something smelled great. Baking bread, he guessed.

And something looked great—her.

Oh, man, I missed this.

“I’ve been back awhile,” he said.

Like, oh, forty-five minutes.

“Where were you?”

“First one place and then another,” he said, still trying to sneak a look at whatever he could and not drool. He wanted to make love with her so bad. He wanted to be as close to her as he could get. He wanted feel her body against his, around his. He wanted to watch her eyes while he took her. He wanted her to say his name.

His name.

And then he wanted to let her rest for a minute and do it all over again. He nearly smiled. The fantasy had gotten pretty exaggerated in the past few weeks.

“Have you ever thought of transferring to the CIA?” she asked, looking over her shoulder. “ I can never get a straight answer out of you.”

“Can’t you?” he asked, smiling broadly now.

“You know I can’t.”

“Well, if you can’t, nobody can,” he said.

“Exactly.” She laughed.

“So what’s new?”

The minute he asked the question, her smile faded. He thought for a minute she was going to cry.

“You...haven’t talked to Lou, I guess,” she said.

“No. Why? Is something wrong?”

“It all depends.”

“On what?”

“On whether you’re Rita Warren or... me. Are you hungry?” she asked abruptly.

“No—yes. What are you talking about? What about Rita?”

“I’ve got the perennial rainy-day favorite—potato soup.”

“Corey, what’s going on?” he said, catching her by the arm to keep her from running off and stirring a pot.
